The Indian mobile network operator, Tata DoCoMo is to drop the DoCoMo brandname as the Japanese investor is looking to sell its stake in the company.
Last year, the company secured a license to retain the DoCoMo brandname for another year, in lieu of what is called a "marginal royalty". It was agreed at the time in order to help the struggling company avoid a costly rebranding exercise.
Japan's NTT DoCoMo decided last year to sell its 26.5% stake in the Indian mobile network, and has exercised an option that forces Tata Teleservices to find a buyer willing to pay at least USD1.3 billion.
Unsurprisingly, Tata has been unable to find a buyer, and the matter has now gone to the London Court of International Arbitration.
Vodafone has been repeated rumoured to be interested in buying the stake, and the rest of the company, but the price is currently far in excess of the mobile network's valuation.
