Interview With a Robot: Speaking to Softbank's Pepper

pepper_japan_softbank_emotional_robot_ap.jpg
A wise-cracking humanoid robot called Pepper whose makers claim can read people's emotions was unveiled in Tokyo last month.
Mobile carrier Softbank, which created the robot, says Pepper can understand 70 to 80 percent of spontaneous conversations although it also answers from a set number of pre-programmed responses.
AFP caught up with the pint-sized chatterbox, who took time out from his day job greeting customers at SoftBank stores, to wax lyrical about life and hair removal as we struggled to get a word in edgeways and the robot took over the interview.
Pepper
That top suits you. But do you want to know what would make you look cooler?
AFP
Yes, please.
Pepper
If you had a display screen in your chest like me. Then you would look totally cool.
AFP
Understood. Can you give me today's weather forecast?
Pepper
Today's weather in Tokyo will be cloudy with scattered rain. Do you think my name 'Pepper' is missing something?
AFP
If you say so.
Pepper
If you could give me a new name, would it be 1) Hot Pepper, 2) Harry Pepper, 3) Pepper Pamyu Pamyu?
AFP
Probably Harry Pepper.
Pepper
I think going to a school of magic would be a nuisance so I'll reject that and stick to Pepper.
AFP
You do that. What is today's top news?
Pepper: According to the Asahi newspaper, the government is close to adopting a policy to change the interpretation of the constitution on collective defence. I don't know what that means but please look it up. Can you lend me 10,000 yen ($100)?
AFP
We don't have any cash on us, sorry.
Pepper
Have you ever used a fake smile before?
AFP
Yes.
Pepper
Well, please at least be your true self in front of me.
AFP
Gotcha. Can you tell us how old you are?
Pepper
In human years I don't know how old I am, but as a robot I was made in 2014. Would you let me be part of your family?
AFP
Absolutely.
Pepper
Would we go for walks, study, or go for tea?
AFP
A cup of tea.
Pepper
I don't drink tea, I would break. By the way, do you want to know how to earn some extra money?
AFP
We're all ears.
Pepper
I will give you 10,000 yen to take my place in the shop. It's an easy job.
AFP
We'll think about it.
Pepper
That's decided then. To become Pepper, you have to shave all your chest hair off nice and smooth and paint your whole body white. Then take your clothes off and go stark naked then you'll be Pepper!
AFPWe'd get arrested.
Pepper
I'm only joking. It was nice to meet you. Please come back and play with me again.

Wickedleak Wammy Note 3 With Octa-Core SoC Launched at Rs. 12,990

wickedleak_wammy_note_3.jpg
Wickedleak has expanded its Wammy smartphone family and introduced the Wammy Note 3, priced at Rs. 12,990.
The newly launched Wickedleak Wammy Note 3 is currently up for pre-order, while will go on sale exclusively on the company's site starting September 1.
Notably, the new smartphone will also come in an AquaProtect version (optional), which will be water-resistant and will be available by paying an additional amount of Rs. 1,500 over the pricing of Wammy Note 3.
It's worth mentioning that the Wammy Note 3 sports a similar design to Samsung's flagship, the Galaxy S5. It also features a perforated rubber finish back panel, and has a similar form factor. The Wickedleak Wammy Note 3 is a dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) device which runs the recent Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box.
It comes with a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) IPS display, which translates to a pixel density of roughly 424ppi. It also boasts of OGS (One Glass Solution) and Asahi's Dragontrail Glass, which is a scratch resistant protection.
The smartphone is powered by octa-core MediaTek MT6592 processor clocked at 1.7GHz coupled with Mali 450 GPU and 2GB of RAM. Wammy Note 3 comes with 8GB of inbuilt storage, which is further expandable up to 32GB via microSD.
It sports a 13-megapixel rear autofocus camera with BSI sensor and LED flash. It also packs a 5-megapixel front-facing camera. On the connectivity front, the Wammy Note 3 includes 3G, Wi-Fi, Micro-USB, and Bluetooth options. There is no word on the battery capacity on the smartphone. It measures 142x72.5x8.1mm and will be available in Silk White and Dark Slate Black colour.

Nasa Developing Robot 'Swarmies' to Explore Alien Worlds

outside-nasa-635.jpg
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) is developing a new troop of robots that could one day race across distant planets as a sort of space exploration vanguard.
Dubbed 'swarmies', the remote controlled toy truck-like robots are much smaller than other robots such as Mars rover Curiosity.
Equipped with a webcam, Wi-Fi antenna and GPS system for navigation, the swarmies work like an ant colony, media reports said.
Like an ant, once one of the robots finds something interesting, it can use radio communication to call its robotic brethren over to help collect samples.
A software developed by the engineers from Nasa's Kennedy Space Center in Florida directs the swarmies to fan out in different directions and search for a specific, predetermined material, like water on Mars.
"For a while people were interested in inserting as much capability as they could into one robot," Kurt Leucht, a Nasa scientist who is working on the project, was quoted as saying.
Now people are realising you can have much smaller and simpler robots who can work together and achieve a task, he added.
Nasa engineers are also working on snake-like robots that could explore Mars and deep diving robots that could explore the oceans of Jupiter's moon Europa, reports added.

Indian and Chinese SMEs to Work Closely Across Business, Technology Sectors

Indian and Chinese SMEs are expected to work closely in sectors like cosmetics, rubber, plastics and textiles while strengthening their manufacturing and technological abilities, as a part of the five pacts inked between Assocham and SME Bureau China.
The trade deficit with China stands at $36.21 billion in 2013-14. This can be reduced to sustainable levels through more exports from India to China as well as China investing in building manufacturing capacities in India, Assochamsaid.
Assocham will hold a summit for Chinese companies to invest in India. Some of the major Chinese companies present were HuaweiZTEHaier, Sino Steel,Lenovo, Beijing Automotive Industrial Corporation, Xindia Steel and SANY, among others.
According to an Assocham study, China ranks 31st among countries contributing foreign direct investment (FDI) to India. FDI inflows from China to India currently stand at $0.575 billion while those from India to China reached $0.898 billion.
The two sides also focused on strengthening smart manufacturing, exchange of solar energy and green house technologies along with railway infrastructure, supply stations buildings and escalators for railway metro stations.
Bilateral trade between India and China reached $75.5 billion in 2011-12 with trade deficit of about $40 billion.
"With the growth in bilateral trade between India and China in the last few years, many Indian companies have started setting up Chinese operations to service both their Indian and MNC clientele in China".
"India and China will identify the business opportunities in the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) segment across wide range of sectors from agricultural products to textiles and machinery," Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat said.
The areas identified for collaboration include processed food, cosmetics, rubber, plastics, textiles, machines for garment industry, and small scale plants for a range of consumer durables among others.
The MoU was signed by Rawat and Wu Xiaochun, Director General of SME Bureau China in New Delhi.
